Alder Creek girls basketball opens with win

Girls basketball has begun for the Alder Creek Middle School Cougars.

Entering their second year of competition with the large middle school Tahneva League, the Cougars opened up the season at home against a very tough Carson Valley team.

The Cougars outlasted Carson Valley by a score of 20-19. Alder Creek led all game until the final two and a half minutes, when the visitors took a one-point led. The lead changed hands five times before the Cougars’ Megan Shalvis hit two free throws with less then 20 seconds remaining.

The first game of the season was primarily a defensive battle. Both teams tried to do too much to compensate for first-game jitters.

Megan Shalvis led all Alder Creek scorers with 15 points. Allyson Costa scored 3 points and Sam O’Connell scored 2. Hilary Bruener, Natalie Duner and Shannon Baumann were major contributors on the defensive side of the ball.

Alder Creek faces Pa Wa Lu today and plays at home next Thursday against Carson Middle School.
