Alder Creek wrestling: Cougars win Modoc Invitational
Alder Creek Middle School took first place with 23 medalists and 11 finalists at the Modoc Invitational (Calif.) on March 14.
“We had a great showing in the tournament with several coaches complementing our program,” said Alder Creek head coach Danny Curtis.
The Modoc tournament included many wrestlers who have been competing for a least five years. But Alder Creek is not far behind. Now in its fourth year of competition, the Cougars have several athletes who have been wrestling competitively for three or four years.
Thor Retzlaff, Tyler Curtis, Sam Mohun, Justin Carter, Javier Virrey and Alex Davis all have at least three years under their belt, and all of them made it to the finals in Modoc.
Retzlaff, a team captain, has a record of 19-2 and leads the team in takedowns with 72. Virrey, also a captain, is still undefeated with a record of 14-0. Mohun has gone 7-1 since starting the season 1-7, and Curtis is 9-4.
Carter is 12-1 after taking second place at Modoc. Carter’s only loss came by injury, as he was unable to finish the tournament. Alex Davis’ record is 11-4.
Each of the wrestlers have earned medals this season.
