Annual Donner Party Hike this weekend

Staff reports

Over 300 people are expected to retrace the steps of the Donner Party this weekend in the ninth Annual Donner Party Hike on Oct. 6 and 7.

Four different interpretive hikes will be led by local guides with outdoor and historical knowledge about the Donner Pass area on Saturday morning beginning at 7:30 a.m. and continuing throughout the day. Participants can choose between an easier trek along Dutch Flat Road or a more strenuous climb over Roller Pass via the Pacific Crest Trail. All hikes will commence at Donner Ski Ranch on Old Highway 40.

In addition to the guided hikes, a historical presentation by Phil Sexton, Lee Schegg and other area historians will be held on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Tahoe Donner Clubhouse. Cost for the presentation and dinner is $25 per person and is limited to the first 60 people with reservations.

The hike will continue on Sunday with two walks with detailed information about the Murphy Cabin and the Donner Party’s encampment at Alder Creek. All hikes include lunch and entrance to the museum.

Registration is $23 for one day and $40 for both. A free commemorative shirt is included with the two-day hike package. For more information, call the Truckee Chamber of Commerce at 587-2757.
