Austin Simonpietri fourth in Gatorade Free Flow Tour Halfpipe Finals

Truckeeand#8217;s Austin Simonpietri recently took fourth place in the menand#8217;s freeski halfpipe finals of the Gatorade Free Flow Tour held at Snowbasin Resort, Utah.

The Feb. 12-13 competition was held in conjunction with the Winter Dew Tour, and featured freeskiing and menand#8217;s and womenand#8217;s snowboarding disciplines for athletes ages 21 and younger. The winners of each discipline received an invitation to compete at the first stop of the 2001-12 Winter Dew Tour.

Simonpietri, a 16-year-old sophomore at Truckee High School, earned a berth in the Free Flow Finals through one of the 24 superpipe qualifiers held across the country. He easily won the qualifier at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort on Feb. 6, posting a score of 94.25 to Incline Village runner-up Alexander Fultonand#8217;s 72.5.

Alex Ferreira of Aspen, Colo., captured the win in the Free Flow Finals to earn a spot in next yearand#8217;s Winter Dew Tour.

Among other local finishes at the Sierra-at-Tahoe qualifier, Quinnten Butler of Truckee won the Jr. Jam Snowboard Halfpipe and Toby Miller was third, while Truckeeand#8217;s Mike Jones and Aspen Spora finished 1-2 in the Jr. Jam Freeski Rail Jam.
