Baseball drops non-leaguer to Fallon; blows 2-0 lead

Thomas Ranson

With the wind howling in the outfield of the Ed Arciniega Athletic Complex, the right field pocket resembled a magnet for Greenwave hitting as 4A Fallon (10-17, 2-10 High Desert League) defeated Truckee 9-3 Wednesday afternoon in a non-league baseball matchup.

Greenwave southpaw Jake Hargis pitched a complete game against the Wolverines. Hargis struck out 11 using his tricky curve to frustrate Truckee hitters. The win avenges an earlier loss Fallon suffered to Truckee at the beginning of the season at Carson City.

Fallon was able to come back after Truckee jumped on Hargis in the top of the first. J.R. Murphy laced a ground-rule double to right field and Nik Smith singled in a run for a 2-0 lead.

But Fallon answered when Cat Baker got the offense rolling in the bottom half of the inning with a first-pitch single. J.P. Tye belted a single to right, and Chad Fiske lined a two-run double near the right field foul line to tie the game, 2-2.

In the third, Fallon’s Rick Cornu laced an RBI double into the right field gap to break the tie, and Fallon took a 6-2 lead into the fourth inning and held on to win behind Hargis.

Truckee is 18-9 on the season and 9-3 in the Northern 3A. It hosts a doubleheader versus Lowry on Saturday, May 1, starting at noon, travels to Damonte Ranch (Reno) on Wednesday, May 4, at 3:30 p.m. and finishes the regular season at North Tahoe for a doubleheader on Saturday, May 8, at noon.
