Sattley resident Wyatt Turner, 11, caught a 5.5-pound rainbow trout from the north shore of Donner Lake on Wednesday morning.

Turner, who was accompanied by grandfather Tobe Stone of Truckee, caught the fish on six-pound test using blue and orange Powerbait. Turner said he was standing a few feet away from his pole when the fish hit.

“I ran and grabbed it, then just started reeling in,” he said. The rainbow “went out a long ways” before Turner gained the upper hand and began hauling it in to shore.

In the spring of 2006 Turner caught a 24-pound mackinaw while trolling on Donner with his grandfather, who has been fishing the lake since 1967.
