Big Mountain Telemark Series swings through Alpine Meadows
ALPINE MEADOWS and#8212; Jake Sakson and Mackenzie Mailly captured wins on the second stop of the Mountain Hardwear Big Mountain Telemark Series held at Alpine Meadows this past weekend.
The two-day competition was pushed back a day, to Saturday and Sunday, due to a powerful storm that blasted the region with another 3 feet of snow late last week.
The dump provided ideal powder conditions for both venues, allowing skiers to confidently charge through Saturday’s qualifying round on Keyhole before feasting on the technical terrain of The Buttress for the sun-drenched Big Mountain Final and Super Final on Sunday.
Of the 31 men who entered, the top 25 advanced past Day 1, while nine of 13 women moved on to the finals.
Sakson, a roving skier from Colorado who lives and skis out of a converted ambulance he calls the Gypsy Mobile, edged Will Cardamone for the win in the men’s division.
Ty Dayberry of South Lake Tahoe rounded out the podium in third, followed by Colin MacMillian and Spencer Jonas. Paul Kimbrough of Mount Baker, Wash., winner of the opening stop of the series at Grand Targhee, Wyo., finished ninth after failing to advance to the Super Final.
On the women’s side, Mailly swept the event by recording the top score in all three runs. Lucy Sackbauer of Vail, Colo., was second as Lizet Christiansen out of Squaw Valley and Alpine took third.
There were no surprises in the junior divisions. After recording wins at Grand Targhee in early February, Bennett Drummond of Truckee and Kami Abi-Nader from the North Shore picked up right where they left off with respective victories.
Grant Johnson was second among junior men and Kenyon Clayton third, while Klara Wohlers and Riley Ebel were second and third, respectively, on the girls’ side.
The Big Mountain Telemark Series, which is put on by Tough Guy Productions of Kings Beach, marks the first comprehensive telemark points series in 10 years. The series now swings through Crested Butte, Colo., from March 17-19 before wrapping up with the invite-only finale at Valdez, Alaska, from April 1-10.
