Boreal to host fifth annual Shop Battle " free of charge
Who cares about shop employees? The Red Dawn does.
Given the state of the industry ” sales down, resort visits down, layoffs and salary cuts, etc. ” the Red Dawn has dropped the $140 entry fee to compete in its 2009 Shop Battle at Boreal Mountain Resort on April 9. Athletes still need a lift ticket or a season pass.
“We call it the Shop Employee Stimulus Package,” says Matt Connelly, commander in chief for the Red Dawn Agency. “This wasn’t the year we could ask shop owners to kick down $140 for a party/contest for their staff. After looking at a few expenses, The Red Dawn decided to cut where we could and cover all remaining costs.
“I think we eliminated any excuses for shops not to come out to Boreal and hang for the day.”
Contest organizers expect the 2008 champions, The Boreal Underground, to have another strong team as well as other past winners: Tahoe Sports Ltd, Shoreline, and Boards N Motion.
Entering its fifth season, The Red Dawn Shop Battle remains a unique competition open to all Northern California and Northern Nevada winter sport retailers.
Teams with two employees, plus two outsiders (aka ringers), compete in a jam-format slopestyle event. First place is all that counts, as the team will walk away with the coveted Red Dawn Bomb, an authentic and inert World War II Bomb weighing more than 50 pounds and inscribed with the winning shop’s name. In addition, the team will receive $3,000 in prizes from LINE Skis, Ride Snowboards, Orage Clothing and others.
This year’s event will be held in Boreal’s new Battle Arena. This is a jib-heavy course designed by Boreal’s Eric Rosenwald with plenty of unique features for the creative rider.
