Boys’ tennis ‘strongest in 10 years’

Dan Savickas

The Truckee boys’ tennis team is off to a great start this season with wins over Carson and Fallon.

In Tuesday’s match against Fallon the Wolverines won 36-9.

Coach Rod Miller, in his first year coaching the team, said the team is the strongest it’s been in the last 10 years.

Last week the Truckee team was well on its way to defeating Incline before the match was rained out. Incline, as one of the top teams in the area, defeated the Wolverines last year; so this was a promising sign for this year’s Truckee team.

“We only lost one senior last year, and we only have one senior this year” Miller said.

Signs point to a strong Truckee tennis program for the next few years.

Gabe Cooper, Kaya Lampe, and Court Hickman won all three of their rounds in their singles matches against Fallon. In doubles action Rob Miller and Seamus Breen won both of their rounds. Greg Beno and JJ Besio won one of their rounds. Evan Carrol and Jeff Hansen won one out of two of their rounds. Wes Hallabough and Brian Kerr won their only match.

Miller expects his team to finish in the top four in the league, qualifying them for team zones.

“I want them to play smart, steady tennis and play well,” Miller said.

Miller’s major goal for the team is to teach them to have fun with the sport.

“Winning is good, but playing and having fun is much more important,” he said.
