Brixey, Ewing named top prep athletes

Staff reports

Truckee High’s Max Brixey and North Tahoe’s Hannah Ewing are the Sierra Sun’s “Athletes of the Week” from Oct. 30-Nov. 4.

– Brixey brought tenacity and fire to the weekend’s Northern Nevada 3A soccer tournament in Winnemucca and helped lead his team to the championship. Brixey tallied three goals in the tourney ” against Yerington, Sparks and in the final against North Tahoe. The sophomore’s tireless energy and constant drive to get to the goal was key in Truckee’s success.

Honorable Mention: Will Akers. The junior goalkeeper came in to spell starter Ryan Newland in the second half of the championship game against North Tahoe and played out of his mind to keep the ball out of his net. Akers put his body on the line and made numerous key saves on the day to hold his team’s 3-1 lead.

– Ewing battled through the Northern 3A tournament like the seasoned veteran she is. The senior scored the tying goal to bring the Lakers back to life in the first-round game against Dayton and she left everything she had on the field in the Lakers’ second-round loss to Truckee, where she truly showed her worth. Against a very talented team, Ewing refused to go quietly, laying down flawless hard tackles throughout the game. Often great players prove their mastery in the way they carry themselves when they lose, not when they win. Ewing’s leadership, grace and passion showed during Friday night’s semifinal.
