Bruce Ajari: Book about Feather River Country fishing is worth a read
Prior to living in the Lake Tahoe region, I made many trips up to the Feather River Country to fish, particularly the North Fork of the Yuba River. It was and still is a terrific region to fly fish. There are so many waters available to the angler.
Many of these waters are only available to those who like to hike. At a recent writerand#8217;s conference I had the good fortune to spend some time with author Tom DeMund, who has written a book entitled and#8220;Feather River Country Adventure Trails.and#8221; DeMund is retired and living in Graeagle and has hiked throughout this area since 1965.
A graduate of Stanford University, he built a vacation home in Graeagle in 1992. Since his retirement from Commercial Real Estate, he now spends even more time in his beloved Feather River Country.
This book describes 101 fun hikes within the region of the Feather River Upper Middle Fork, the Lakes Basin and the North Yuba River area. While not a specific fishing guide, it will direct you to many lakes within the Tahoe National Forest that provide good fishing.
It covers one of my favorite areas in the Sierra and#8212; the Sierra Lakes Basin. I used to camp there with my children when they were growing up and fished this area often when I was a youngster.
The author will show you a number of hikes in this area that can also be productive for fishermen. There are a number of lakes within a short hike of a trailhead that can provide some very good angling for those willing to stretch their legs.
It is a great book for the occasional hiker as well as a seasoned veteran. DeMund offers basic checklists on things to be sure and bring, which will help the uninitiated. Itand#8217;s also a good reminder for the regular hiker.
Each of the hikes is well described with details on the length of the hike, elevation gain and relative difficulty. He also offers a great insight on what you might expect to see on the hike.
This is an excellent book on hiking in a region that is really quite close to the North Lake Tahoe area. If you like to hike this would be an excellent book for you to pick up. It is available in local bookstores.
