The Tahoe Truckee Flyfishers held their annual barbecue this past weekend at the Truckee Regional Park on the Truckee River. The Tahoe Truckee Flyfishers are a group of anglers dedicated to furthering the sport of fly fishing.

They meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month, excluding November and December due to the holidays. At the monthly meeting there are a short business meeting, a program of some kind on the sport and a great raffle. The public is encouraged to attend.

The current meeting location is at the Truckee Donner Public Utility District Board Room located on Donner Pass Road. The meetings start at 6:30 p.m. with a fly-tying demonstration by one of our great local tiers. The regular meeting begins at 7 p.m.

The barbecue is an annual social event for the group. It is a great day of fun with terrific food, casting games and some great stories being passed along amongst members and guests.

During the casting games, attendees get a chance to try the latest Sage rods provided by Jamie Lyle, our area Sage representative.

I have to tell you about this year. I got a chance to try a 5-weight Sage ZXL, and I really enjoyed the way it cast. Fly rod design is based on how the rod flexes. The ZXL is a progressive taper rod, which promotes a rather slow action and flexes from the base to tip. Faster-action rods flex from the midpoint of the rod to the tip of the rod.

The ZXL had the type of action that I began with, so this particular rod really felt nice in my hands. I was thoroughly impressed with just what a great fishing rod this was for me.

Others tried, and were equally impressed, with the faster rods such as the Z-Axis. If you get a chance to try one of these Sage rods out, I would strongly suggest you do so. They are terrific rods.
