Buddy Werners ski strong

Soda Springs hosted the Buddy Werner “Big Gee” ski race on Sunday, Feb. 25, sponsored by the Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District.

Local Truckee Buddy Werner skiers ranging from 6 and under to 13 and 14 years old competed against young skiers from around the basin.

In the girl’s 6 and under division, Erica Dill captured third place and Allison McDaniel finished fifth. Stein Retzlaff finished fourth among the boys in the same age group, followed by Ried Lambres in seventh, Thor Retzlaff in eighth and Austin Simonpietri in ninth.



Mitch Nelson pulled out a strong third place day for the TBW boys’ 7 and 8 year old group and Andre Simonpietri came in a solid fourth place. Melissa Luke finished fifth for the girls in the same age division. Bernie Nelson led the girls’ 9 and 10 year olds with a first place finish, just ahead of teammate Sarah Grossman in second. Robert Raber also topped the boys pack in this age group.

Jordan Raber and Kler Coxson won the girls and boys honors in the 11 and 12 year old race, while Michelle Smith and Nicole Panziera clenched fourth and fifth for the girls and Sean Mooney ended the day in fourth place.



Truckee skiers comprised nearly every racer in the boys 13 and 14 division, taking second, third, fourth, fifth and seventh place in this category.

Kieman Mooney was the top Truckee Buddy Werner finisher, followed by Clint Monfalcone in third and Tony Levezzo in fourth.
