STATELINE, Nev. — Defending tournament champion Mark Mulder enters the 2016 American Century Championship as one of the golfers to beat.
The former MLB pitcher with the Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals has 3-1 odds to repeat as celebrity golf champ, making him a co-favorite at the tournament held Friday through Sunday, July 22-24, at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.
“I’ll be more than ready to go,” Mulder said in June. “At one time or another, I’ve had it going in all parts of this course. I love the setup of it and it fits my game.”
Mulder finished in the top eight for three straight years prior to winning it all in 2015 with 82 points, two off the tournament record.
He has 3-1 odds along with former tennis pro Mardy Fish, who finished fourth last year while making his second ACC appearance.
Two-time ACC champion and ex-NFL quarterback Mark Rypien checks in just behind Mulder and Fish with 9-2 odds; he won it all in 2014 and finished 21st last year.
Two-time NBA MVP and Golden State Warriors’ Splash Brother Stephen Curry has 5-1 odds, along with former MLB All-Star pitcher Eric Gagne, last year’s runner-up.
Others with short odds to win the ACC include actor and two-time champ Jack Wagner (7-1), NHL All-Star and perennial contender Jeremy Roenick (8-1), actor Lucas Black (10-1), and San Jose Sharks center Joe Pavelski (10-1), who is making his tournament debut.
Warrior Open champion and ex-Marine Andrew Bachelder enters with 15-1 odds to claim the crown.
“I’ve been practicing a lot,” Bachelder said in June. “Ever since I got the invite, it’s been all about the American Century Championship. That is my focus.”
At the other end of the list, perennial long shot Charles Barkley is a 6,000-1 underdog in his 21st appearance.
Larry the Cable Guy and Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles are in the neighborhood of the NBA Hall of Famer, each with 3,000-1 odds.
