Also honored as one of the top 10 student-athletes was North Tahoe senior Tara Gallant, who competes in cross-country, Nordic skiing and track and field for the Lakers.

According to the NIAA, the awards are given not only to the top high school senior athletes in the state, but also the student-athletes who exemplify total school and community involvement.

After being nominated by their respective schools, athletes were considered based on their participated in multiple sports, other school groups and/or student government activities and community service projects while maintaining a high GPA.

Ten athletes were then selected from the Northern region of the state and 10 from the Southern region. A banquet was held at the Peppermill Resort Casino in Reno to honor the student-athletes.
