Delgado, Froelich honored as top athletes
Truckee Highs Cole Froelich and North Tahoes Paco Delgado are the Sierra Suns Athletes of the Week from Nov. 6-10. Delgado, an attacker and the only senior on the North Tahoe boys soccer team, has shown his masterful skill on the ball all season. Delgados ability to run at players, as well as his ball-handling skills, make the forward/midfielder hard to defend on the field and a constant scoring threat around the goal. Not a big player, Delgados corner kick header to put the Lakers up 20 in the state final against Truckee on Saturday was not necessarily a typical Delgado goal, but an example of his ability to put himself in dangerous places at the right times. Delgado is a fun player to watch, whether hes going at a player, or stuck on a sideline, smiling as he nutmegs his opponent. But fun and games aside, Delgado was instrumental in the success of this years championship Laker squad. Froelich, a senior midfielder on the Truckee boys soccer team, never lost drive or focus during Truckees hard-fought battle with North Tahoe during Saturdays state final in Las Vegas. Froelich could be heard yelling and motivating his team until the final whistle blew, despite trailing by two goals. His tenacity and the fire in his play never ceased, as was the case with all of his teammates. In addition to being an instrumental player in the Wolverines run at a state championship, Froelich also showed maturity and sportsmanship in the way he carried himself through the loss. Starting again once the winter prep seasons begin, the Sierra Sun will be naming one Athlete of the Week from Truckee High and one from North Tahoe in the Sports & Outdoors section every Tuesday. Coaches, please submit the name of an athlete with details about his or her performance from the previous week. During the fall prep season, the Sun received very few athlete nominations. Truckee coaches can send their nominees to firstname.lastname@example.org, and North Tahoe coaches can send theirs to email@example.com.
