Donner Lake Swim having 20th anniversary

With more than 300 swimmers expected to turn out, the Donner Lake Swim returns for the 20th year Saturday.

Swimmers compete in five-year age groups, with the youngest 19-24. It is not unusual to have entrants in their 70s and 80s in the oldest open-water swim in Northern California.

Race director Nancy Rose said “the challenge of swimming in a lake that rarely exceeds 68 degrees and is 5,933 feet above sea level brings many people back year after year.”

The swim is sponsored by Sierra Nevada Masters, the local masters’ swim club and Truckee-Tahoe Swim Team (Torpedoes), the local age group swim club. Proceeds are split between the two programs and are used to defray team expenses. The Torpedoes contributes a $1,000 scholarship to Tahoe-Truckee High School every year.

Boaters are encouraged to watch out for swimmers on race day.

Entry fees costs $25.

Participants must be registered with United States Masters Swimming ($25 yearly fee). Registration in USMS can be obtained from Nancy Ridout at (415) 892-0771.

Volunteers are needed for the race.
