Donner Lake Triathlon returning for 31st year

The Donner Lake Triathlon returns to West End Beach for the 31st year on Saturday and Sunday, offering an International and sprint distance as well as its Kids Triathlon.
The triathlon, which is among the longest-running in the country, is known for its awe-inspiring and challenging courses, including the taxing bike leg up Old Highway 40 to Kingvale and back.
and#8220;It’s a classic race,and#8221; says event director Todd Jackson, who owns and operates Big Blue Adventure, which also produces the Lake Tahoe Triathlon on Tahoe’s West Shore and the XTERRA off-road triathlons in Incline Village and Tahoe City. and#8220;The venue is spectacular. We’ve got a great swim, a solid climb, a scenic run and we’re at a high altitude. This event is all about continuing the tradition started right here in Truckee.and#8221;
International and sprint triathletes will enter the water Sunday starting at 7 a.m. The top sprint finishers are expected to finish within the hour, while the International-distance leaders are expected to reach the finish around 9 a.m.
On Saturday, the sport’s youth will take to the swim-bike-run course for the Donner Lake Kids Triathlon. The event focuses on introducing young athletes to the sport in a fun, non-competitive atmosphere. Kids’ distances are based on age and those as young as 4 can compete.
New this year, Big Blue Adventure has partnered with Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. to host a post-race barbecue and beer garden to benefit the Tahoe Luna Chix Team and Breast Cancer Fund.
Volunteers are also needed, and will earn $10 an hour of race credit for helping out on the water, during the run or on the bike course. Volunteers also get free lunch and commemorative T-shirt.
