Donner Lake Triathlon returning to West End Beach
TRUCKEE and#8212; If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That pretty well sums up Todd Jackson’s theory when it comes to running the Donner Lake Triathlon.
and#8220;It’s a classic, so it’s hard to mess with,and#8221; said Jackson, whose Kings Beach-based Seventh Wave Productions purchased the event last year from longtime producer A Change of Pace, Inc.
The 29th edition of the popular triathlon returns Sunday to Donner Lake’s West End Beach, where both the sprint and international triathlons kick off at 7 a.m. For those who haven’t signed up, registration will be offered at West End Beach on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Local residents receive a 10 percent discount, Jackson said.
The international triathlon will consist of the usual 0.9-mile swim, 24.8-mile bike ride up Old Highway 40 toward Kingvale and back and 6 1/2-mile run around Donner Lake to the West End Beach finish.
The sprint course measures out to a quarter-mile swim, a 6-mile bike ride up Old Highway 40 and back and a 2-mile run to the finish, which is set up in a spectator-friendly location on the grass near the Summit Creek inlet.
Jackson said he expects 800 or more triathletes to participate.
Steven Sexton, 28, of Davis, is signed up to defend his title in the international triathlon for a fourth consecutive year, as he took the win last summer with a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, 12 seconds. Last year’s women’s division winner, Shannon Rahlves, had not registered as of Thursday. Rahlves, the sister of retired Alpine ski racer Daron Rahlves of Truckee, captured the win a year ago with a time of 2:25:23.
In the sprint triathlon, 46-year-old Michael Smith of Santa Barbara will return to defend his titles from last year and 2007 (the race was canceled in 2008 due to heavy smoke in the Truckee area). Smith, who’s been a force in the sprint distance of the race for years, posted a winning time of 39 minutes, 47 seconds a year ago.
Volunteers are still needed to help with the race on Sunday morning. If interested, call 541-908-1626 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
