Donner Party Mountain Runners | California International Marathon caps running season
Last Sunday, more than 9,000 runners lined up in Folsom for the 32nd annual California International Marathon. Weather conditions were ideal, with sunny skies and temperatures in the 50s. Among the athletes were many local runners, and a strong contingent from the Donner Party Mountain Runners.
Top finishers from the Truckee-Tahoe area were Kara LaPoint of Truckee (3:04:28), Gretchen Brugman of Truckee (3:17:01) and David Norton of South Lake Tahoe (3:24:25).
Chaz Sheya was our fastest Donner Party Mountain Runner in a time of 3:13:47. Also coming in under three and a half hours were Chris Perillo (3:22:29) and Jenelle Potvin (3:25:15).
We had two sets of married couples from the club completing the race. Jeff and Laura Brown of Truckee came across the line in 3:42:26 and 4:23:17, respectively. Allyson and Chris Conwell finished in 3:39:44 and 4:02:39. Way to keep it in the family, you guys!
Mone’ Haen ran a 4:38:59, and Helen Pelster had a strong finish in 3:53:48. Although like many of us, Pelster did not finish as fast as she had hoped. She summed up the feeling of the experience well by declaring, “It was a fabulous day!”
Diana Schlaff of Truckee finished her first big city marathon, and Sharon Fong, also of Truckee, completed her 22nd marathon.
With many family and friends present, it was an enjoyable day for all the runners and a great way to wrap up the running season.
Incline runner wins half marathon
Meanwhile in San Francisco, JP Donovan of Incline Village and Anna Mae Flynn of Tahoma represented Tahoe well in the North Face Endurance Challenge: California on Saturday.
Donovan won the half marathon in a field of 949 runners with a time of 1:26:25, and Flynn finished second among women and 16th overall in 1:39:57.
Truckee runners win ultra lotteries
Two important lotteries for the ultrarunning community were held on Dec. 6 – The Western States Endurance Run lottery, and the Hardrock 100 lottery.
From Truckee, Betsy Nye will return to Hardrock, and Paul Sweeney will be “doing the double,” running Western States in June and Hardrock in July. Ryan Weibel of South Lake Tahoe will also be toeing the line at Western States.
Other Donner Party Mountain Runners who will start at Squaw Valley in June are Bill Hunter, Mike Kreaden, and Kynan and Laura Matz. Good luck to all the runners!
