Downhill team takes first at Alpine

LARA MULLIN, Sierra Sun

After two third place finishes, the Truckee Alpine ski team took home first and second place on Tuesday in a giant slalom race at Alpine Meadows.

Tim Jitloff raced in for a first place overall finish, propelling the boys’ team to the top spot over second place North Tahoe.

Following Jitloff were Mike Thomas in fourth place and Gary Cook in fifth, two skiers that have been consistently in the top five this season. Jitloff started the day in the thirtieth spot, but after one run moved up to first place and held on to win the day.

Joe Auckenthaler, a former racer who has shifted his focus to the realm of freeskiing, relied on his years of gate training to pull out a twelfth place finish and give the Wolverines valuable team points.

In the girls’ race, Stacey Cook led the pack to give Truckee a first place finish and Miranda Funston and Heidi Henderson finished sixth and eighth respectively. Funston is a new addition to the small Wolverine squad, and skis for Squaw Valley ski team.

Jamie Bond rounded out the pack with a twelfth place run, helping her team finish second behind South Tahoe.

After four races, TTHS currently stands in third place in the league standings behind first place North Tahoe and second place South Tahoe. The team’s next race is next Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Diamond Peak.
