End of the line; Football season over with loss to Virgin Valley

After being on the winning side of so many “blowout” games this season, Tahoe-Truckee High School football coach Bob Shaffer said it was difficult for the Wolverines to swallow the fact that they trailed Virgin Valley by 31 points during the 3A state football semifinal Saturday – and it wasn’t even halftime.

“We couldn’t believe we were down 31-0,” said Shaffer after watching the Wolverines eventually fall 37-20. “They scored the first five times they had the ball – we just couldn’t stop the tide from rolling in on us.”

The loss to the Bulldogs, who Truckee defeated last year in the state championship game, was the culmination of an entirely forgettable weekend for the Wolverines, who didn’t even arrive at their hotel in Mesquite until 9 a.m. Friday after a series of transportation problems kept the team up for much of Thursday night.

“We looked sluggish during the game,” Shaffer said. “Our players seemed to be a half step behind their players.”

Shaffer said Truckee hadn’t faced a team as big as Virgin Valley all season.

“Virgin Valley was the first team we had faced that had the size of that nature,” said Shaffer of the Bulldog offensive line which included two 300-pounders. “They were a big, tough, physical team.
