Fall preview 2001: Girls’ Tennis

Lara Mullin, Sierra Sun

With nine girls returning from last year’s team and a packed roster of 16 players, the varsity tennis team is in solid position as the season kicks off next Tuesday against South Lake Tahoe.”Our team is fairly similar to last year,” said Head Coach Laura Borghello. “We have girls of all ability levels and years of experience on the court.”Of course, running a practice for a team that combines beginners, intermediate and advanced players is a difficult task for any coach, and Borghello, Assistant Coach Caroline Rose and the staff at Tahoe Donner Tennis Club have spent countless hours volunteering their time to organize a competitive and confident team.”We are running drills to focus on strokes for the new players and consistency and strategy for the more experienced girls,” Borghello said. The long hours and efforts of the volunteer coaches are worth it, Rose says, as the improvement in the new players in just a few weeks is marked.Leading the team this year will be #1 singles player Lindsay Borghello, who led the Northern 3A division in 2000. Lindsay, #2 singles Jackie Schwartz and #3 Shelly Ratto will be looking to challenge strong teams from Galena, McQueen and Manogue this fall.”We are both very optimistic about the team and our chances this year,” added Borghello. Many teams in the 3A division boast a wide spectrum of skill and experience levels, thus giving even the newest players the chance to garner a win for Truckee in competitive play. The Wolverines do not have a definitive doubles team list yet, as Borghello is still observing individual and team play during practices this week.Tahoe Donner Tennis Pro Greg Cosgrove is also working with the girls’ team to sharpen their skills prior to the season start.Girls’ tennis scheduleTues.
