FALL SPORTS PREVIEW: Wolverines hit the mat with high expectations
The Wolverine wrestling team started practice on Nov. 13, providing a few solid weeks of practice before its first tournament at Yerington on Dec. 2.
With four individual wrestlers who placed in state competition last year returning, coach Mike Halket is looking forward to a solid year of competition.
Junior Jessie Helsdon, who weighs in at 215 pounds, placed third in state last year and was looking tough in practice until recently. As a result of a broken hand earlier this week, Helsdon will now be out for a few months and possibly the entire season.
James Curtis, a senior who also placed third in state last year, promises to be an indomitable force for the Wolverines.
Junior Ian Wrenn and senior Brian Kendrick both placed in state competition last year and will return to wrestle this season for TNT with more experience under their belts and domination in mind.
The biggest competition for the Wolverines this year will not take place until the end of December at the Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno, thus allowing the young team plenty of time for preparation.
Halket is working with the team on consistency and aggresiveness in anticipation of tough competition.
“I expect everyone to perform on their own as well as part of the team,” said Halket.
While individual performances will win post-season honors for the Wolverines, teamwork is essential in every match and Halket is expecting each wrestler to perform tough.
Gaps in weight classes will be an obstacle to high team scores in tournament competition for Truckee, yet Halket is still actively recruiting more wrestlers to join the small team.
