Finding fish through the Web

California has a great number of fishing opportunities. To help you plan your fishing day, the California Department of Fish and Game has developed the FishingGuide on their Web site at: http://www.dfg.ca.gov./fishing/html/FishingGuide/FishingGuide.html.

The FishingGuide contains locations which Fish and Game has determined will offer excellent opportunities for recreational fishing. These locations were derived in part from the DFG’s trout planting data, as well as from input by DFG regional and headquarters staff.

This interactive program was compiled by Fisheries Programs Branch through communications with DFG staff. The software was written by Information Technology Branch, a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Unit staff.

It appears to be a fairly good site although my personal computer is not able to take full advantage of all of its features. Technology is a wonderful thing, but if you do not have the ability to view it the site is meaningless.

If you do have the capability, this site will provide the angler with some pretty good information. As indicated above, the site was derived from fish planting information and other input from field personnel. The locations all have pretty easy access for the angler.

For an angler that wants to know where to go in a new area of the state to fish, this site should provide some valuable information. He or she can even target the species of fish that he or she would like to catch and see where in the state this would be available. So, if you are a trout fisherman, you can see where else in the state that you may want to plan a trip based on the angling opportunities.

As a fly fisher, you may want to know where all of the wild trout waters in the state are located. This site will do that for you as well.

The site is GIS based, so it has a number of good options regarding different layers. I wanted to see the different county boundaries so I selected that option. It displayed the various counties throughout the state and allowed me to find options within those geographic boundaries.

With such technology at our fingertips, an angler that is planning on going to another part of the state can find out what type of fishing may be available to her or him. In this way, any trip taken to just about anywhere in the state can provide an angling opportunity for the fisherman or woman.

I suggest that you give this Web site a try when you get the chance. It is well worth the effort if you can access all of the capabilities that this site has to offer. The are many great locations to fish in the state. Check out this Web site and find some other opportunities for yourselves.

The site also provides an e-mail response for suggestions. If you do not find what you like or would like to see something displayed differently, provide the Department of Fish and Game with some feedback using the e-mail response.
