A full moon snowshoe tour this weekend will kick off a month of outdoor events at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore.

The snowshoe tour will take place Saturday and will include natural and cultural history presentations around the Hellman-Ehrman estate and Tahoe’s shoreline, according to a press release from California State parks.

“Few experiences compare to snowshoeing in the light of a full moon along the snow covered Tahoe shoreline,” according to the release. “For those new to snowshoeing, there will be a beginner’s clinic at 6:30pm sponsored by West Shore Sports. The Full Moon hike starts promptly at 7 pm and begins near the restrooms in the Day Use side of the park (lake side entrance off Highway 89).”

The program lasts about 1.5 hours and costs $25 per person. Children 12 and under are free. The cost includes event parking and snowshoe rentals. Space is limited and reservations must be made through West Shore Sports at 530-525-9920. A similar tour will take place Jan. 31.

On Saturday, Jan. 10, state park staff will host a family friendly cross-country skiing biathlon.

“This is an opportunity for the general public to experience skiing similar to the cross-country Biathlon Trail of the 1960 Winter Olympics, shooting at a target for accuracy and getting timed results,” according to the release. “You will be skiing one lap of the Blue Trail, catching your breath and shooting at a target 30 feet away with a safe laser rifle. The Blue Trail is approximately 3 km.”

On Saturday, Jan. 17, state parks staff will also lead a Snowshoe Through History hike along the West Shore.

“This easy and fun tour explores the lakefront and the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion estate,” according to the release. “Learn about the natural environment that attracted Tahoe’s earliest settlers and explore the fascinating history of a Tahoe landmark.”
