As the world watched the start of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, 8,000 young athletes between the ages of 7 and 18 gathered in Baltimore last week for the 46th Annual USA Track andamp; Field Junior Olympics. Qualifying for Junior Olympics at the national level involves placing well in an athlete’s association and regional meets.Truckee High School athlete Gabrielle Rinne qualified for Junior Olympic Nationals for the second year in a row by placing first in the 1,500-meter run in both the Pacific Association championships held in Modesto in June with a time of 5:00 and in the Region 15 Junior Olympics in Tulare in early July with a time of 5:01. Region 15 covers most of California and Northern Nevada. At age 15, Rinne races as a first-year Intermediate Girl against other 15- and 16-year-olds. With 42 racers in her age division, competing in three preliminary heats on Thursday, the competition was fierce. Despite battling jet lag, the heat and humidity of a Baltimore summer and a knee injury, Rinne set a new personal best of 4:57 to place third in her heat, and ninth overall. The performance qualified her for a berth in the finals, in which she placed 12th on Sunday.
