Gelso swims to personal best marks at Far Western Championships

Staff reports

Truckee High sophomore Daniel Gelso, 14, swam to a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter individual medley and placed eighth in the 100 breaststroke at the Pacific Swimming Long Course Far Western Championships in Concord on July 26-30.

Gelso, who swims year-round for Reno Aquatics, set a personal-best time of 2:20:05 in the 200-meter individual medley, and posted a time of 1:13:17 in the 100 breaststroke.

“It was big,” Gelso said of the Far Western Championships, which drew 1,100 swimmers and 109 swim teams, including 12 teams from Canada and two from Mexico.

Gelso was also one of nine 13- to 14-year-old boys selected from Northern California and Northern Nevada to represent Pacific Swimming at the Western Zone Championships.

That meet will be held in Fresno on Aug. 8-12. Gelso said his goal at the Western Zone meet is to set a national record in his age group in the 200 individual medley.
