General trout season closed

The local trout season for area lakes and streams that runs from the last Saturday in April through Nov. 15 has closed. This affects most waters with the exception of those lakes that remain open year round.

The Truckee River, Little Truckee River, and Martis Lake are among the most notable roadside waters that are affected by the closure. Local lakes like Boca, Donner, Prosser, Stampede and Tahoe are unaffected by the regular season since they are open year round.

The 2004 season began with good fishing due to a pretty dry winter and subsequent low run-off which peaked at a pretty early date. The spring fishing was very good in the Truckee River, Little Truckee, and other local waters as a result of these lower than normal flows.

As the season progressed, the fishing got a little tougher as low water situations were encountered. Overall though, the fishing was pretty consistent if you were able to pay attention to the flows. The Truckee River below Boca Reservoir was one of the areas that had consistent flows throughout the year due to releases from Boca.

As we progressed into the fall, flows became extremely low, even in the stretch below Boca. With reservoirs at very low levels, not much water was being released into the river.

Lake Tahoe dropped below its natural rim and water ceased to flow into the Truckee River the first week in October. This lack of flow has essentially dewatered the area between Tahoe City and River Ranch.

Flows from the confluence of Bear Creek and the Truckee River, below River Ranch, down to Truckee were also very low. Below Donner Creek the flows remained low, but were fishable.

Surprisingly, the fishing in the low flows was pretty good overall. The reports during the fall were better than would have been expected given the low water conditions.

While the early snowfall we have experienced has given us cause for hope for the coming year; only a very good winter snowpack will help improve our already dire recreation forecast for the coming year. We need a good snowpack to provide the water to help fill our lakes and reservoirs to provide the water for the Truckee River.

Keep in mind that the year round lakes are still open for fishing even though the 2004 General Trout Season has closed. Besides our local waters, there are also a several other excellent options that are relatively close-by and can be a good day trip. These waters are Frenchman Reservoir and Davis Lake north of Truckee, and Pyramid Lake northeast of Sparks.
