GET IN THE GAME: UPickEm crunch time quickly approaching

Week three of the NFL season finished up last night (I’m writing this on Tuesday for Wednesday’s paper) with a 48-29 victory by Philip Rivers’ Chargers over Brett Favre’s Jets.

The game featured some great quarterback play (both Rivers and Favre threw for three touchdowns) and a cool storyline (Rivers has idolized Favre since he was a boy), and best of all, the right result to garner me one more point in the Sierra Sun’s Pro Football UPickEm game.

I was feeling good sitting on 12 points (out of 16 possible) until I checked the official results and discovered that we had a clear winner this week, and it wasn’t me.

Tammy Raber of Truckee took the top prize this week ” a pair of lift tickets to Sugar Bowl for the 2008-’09 season ” with 13 points, setting her up in a strong position to challenge for the overall season title.

Speaking of which, new players who want to have any kind of shot at winning the overall title of UPickEm Master when the season is over need to get in the game NOW.

With the UPickEm overall scoring system, a player’s worst four weeks of picks are thrown out, meaning those who have missed the first four weeks of the season still have a shot, if they sign up right away.

So everybody out there who thinks they can outpick Tammy, Sierra Sun Sports Editor Sylas Wright, myself and the rest of the local pro football fans out there needs to register online at and show us what you’ve got.

Weekly winners will receive prizes from our local sponsors and the glory of being in the paper next week.

This week’s prize sponsor is Sugar Bowl Resort.
