Girls Soccer: Girls defeat Lakers

Staff reports

The Truckee girls’ soccer team avenged its earlier loss this season to North Tahoe Monday with a 2-1 victory, handing the Laker team its second loss of the season and taking over sole possession of first place in NIAA/U.S. Bank 3A play. The field at Bishop Manogue in Reno was the only field available that wasn’t covered in snow, and is several yards narrower and shorter than regulation -a major factor in Truckee’s win.

The Lady Lakers played a strong first half. Tracie Prado scored the first goal of the game, assisted by Brittany Bent and North Tahoe defense handled the Wolverine pressure, causing almost all of Truckee’s shots to go high and outside the goal, flying down to the football field below.

But Mike Holman’s team was able to make the necessary adjustments in what became a very physical second half.

“We had the lead in the first half and I think we got a little complacent. When the game got physical we backed off,” said North Tahoe coach Gary Dietz.

In the second half, the game did indeed get physical. On a field as small as Manogue’s, it is difficult for players to spread out and thwart off physical play. Aggressive play and determination the Wolverines was enough to get the Lakers to relent and give up control of the midfield, and enable Truckee to score two goals in the second half.
