Gold Rush at Far West

LARA MULLIN, Sierra Sun

One of Far West Nordic’s largest fund-raisers for the junior cross country skiing programs is this weekend at the nationally acclaimed California Gold Rush.

The Gold Rush events will be held at Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Area and will donate all proceeds from the event to Far West.

Saturday, spectators can watch the area’s young racers vie for the top spot in either the Gold Nuggets Kids Race at 10:30 a.m. or see the older kids perform in the “jumps and bumps” Supercross event.

Other Saturday events include a Kids’ Ski Clinic from the Fischer/Salomon/Subaru Factory Team of top national racers, along with a Fischer/Salomon ski and boot demo throughout the day.

A special clinic will be held at Paco’s Bike and Ski in Truckee at 6 p.m. on Friday evening to hear Jim Fredericks of the Rossignol Factory Team explain the tricks and techniques of cross country ski waxing and preparation.

The highlight of the weekend is Sunday’s events with a variety of races to suit any level of skier. Top billing goes to the 50 kilometer Gold Rush, with national-caliber racers from across the country. Shorter races include the Silver Rush 30 km, the Bronze Rush 15 km, and the Junior Rush 6 km for racers 15 years of age and under.
