Golf expected to end season today

Lara Mullin, Sierra Sun

Today’s match at Rosewood Lakes may very well mark the last swing of Wolverine golf clubs for the 2001 fall season.

The ladies were unable to collect enough team points to move onto post-season play as a team, and are still awaiting individual rankings, though Coach Mike Merriman says he is not optimistic about sending any players to the State Championships.

Merriman was faced with the challenge of a young and inexperienced team this year, losing several strong players and last year’s State Champion to graduation.

Despite struggles throughout the season to finish strongly as a team, several players showed marked improvement; dropping more than 40 strokes off their game.

Senior Marissa Allen posted her best score of the season at Lowry on Sept. 21 with a 118 and also led the team at their home invitational with a 124 on Sept. 28.

At Fernley last Friday, Tiffany Schegg recorded her best score of the year with a 118, taking only 51 strokes on the back nine holes.

Junior Michelle Harrington also displayed immense improvement, finishing the round with 122 strokes. Katie Jones and Amy Watkins finished with 124 and 130 strokes respectively.

Though the girls played well amidst the pack, they did not qualify as a team with only four players participating.

Today’s match closes out the regular season, and Merriman says he is optimistic about next year.
