Highlanders to host dinner fundraiser
The Incline High School baseball team will be hosting a benefit dinner on Tuesday, June 6 at Big Water Grille to raise funds for upgrading the team’s baseball fields.
The team is selling tickets for a sunset dinner and silent auction, which will be attended by former professional baseball players Matt Nokes and Todd Coburn.
According to Incline Assistant Coach Robert Green, the Highlanders baseball team is the only squad in the 2A Northern League that doesn’t play on a grass infield.
“The main focus of the fundraiser is to do a grass infield,” Green said. “We have a silent auction going on that will have a pair of tickets to see Hamilton in San Francisco along with a lot of other items.”
The Highlanders came into last season with a bevy of inexperienced players and a roster that sported one upperclassman, junior pitcher Tristan Summers.
After having several games canceled due to inclement weather, the Highlanders jumped right into league play to start the year and picked up their season’s first win with a 15-6 victory over White Pine on March 24.
Incline went on to finish the year with a record of 7-13, and were 7-12 within the Northern League.
Summers was among the team’s leaders from the plate, batting a team-high .432 over 13 games played. Sophomore Jacob Leoncio led the team with 20 hits and 19 stolen bases.
From the mound, sophomore Trent Green led the team three wins and 25 innings pitched. Green, Summers and freshman Jake Harrell combined to strikeout 61 batters over the course of the year.
Although the Highlanders struggled within their league with such an inexperienced group of players last season, the team should be set up to contend in the coming seasons as a roster heavy on sophomore and freshmen players continue to gain experience on the field.
The Highlanders benefit dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, June 6 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Big Water Grille.
According to Green, Big Water Grille opened its doors to the team on a night when the restaurant would otherwise be closed.
Tickets for the dinner and silent auction cost $75 with all proceeds going to upgrade Incline’s fields.
Tickets can be found at EventBrite.com by searching IHS Baseball Fundraising Celebration or at I.V. Coffee Lab.
