Home finale: boys claim first win

While victory is commonplace for the Tahoe-Truckee girls’ varsity swim team, the varsity boys’ swim team overcame depleted numbers and claimed its first win of the season at the last home meet this year.

The whole season, the boys’ team has been at a disadvantage due to depth and a lack of swimmers, but Friday accomplished what has been its goal since the beginning of the year: to win a meet. The boys defeated the Douglas Tigers 60-52.

During the meet, Kyle Gamet, Wes Ajari, Nikolai Travis and Joe Dahlen broke the school record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:57.26.

Ajari beat his personal best in the 100 yard breaststroke by two seconds, logging a time of 1:02.27. Josh Burgess recorded his best finish of the season, placing second in the 100 yard freestyle.

The girls, who have only lost one meet this season, recorded a 97-71 win.

Lisa Kucera, Lauren Browning, Jessica McGovern and Shannon Lankenau led the team to victory by claiming first places in at least one of their individual events. Katie Casey, Tasha Heckendorn, Morgan Adamski, Becca Logan and Tiffany Hopkins all achieved personal bests during the afternoon meet.

“In swimming, not only are you swimming against the opposing team, you are always swimming against yourself and trying to achieve a personal best time,” Nicolopolus said. “Most everyone on the team keeps improving their time every meet they compete in. It’s so exciting to see seconds shed from individual times.”
