Inaugural Wild West races held on Donner Summit

About 70 runners showed up to the inaugural Wild West Half Marathon and 6.4-mile Run at Donner Summit on Sunday.

The event, ran on road and trail, was organized by “Big Al” Kirkman to promote physical activity.

Brian McKinney of Woodland, Calif., won the men’s half marathon with a time of 1:39:37. He was followed by Truckee’s Doug Meier (1:48:00) and David Bunker (1:52:25), also of Truckee. Sarah Raitter of Reno won the women’s half marathon with a time of 1:46:15, followed by Angela Matthews of Sacramento (1:48:05).

Patrick Mahoney of Winona, Minn., won the 6.4-mile run with a time of 40:17, followed by Ross McMahan of Incline Village (42:14) and Dominic Chelni of San Carlos, Calif. (42:53).

“It was rough,” Mahoney said. “I think I found out pain lives at 6,700 feet today.”

In the women’s 6.4-mile race, Melanie Maxfield of Reno placed first with a time of 55:03. Connie Blackmore of Reno came in second with a time of 57.06 and Sierra Wilson of Sparks was third in 57:06.
