Incline at North Tahoe soccer: Lakers win intense rival games (with gallery)
The Lakers are scheduled to play league games at Battle Mountain on Thursday, while the Highlanders play at Pershing County on Friday and at Battle Mountain on Saturday.
Rarely is a high school soccer crowd as large and fervent as the one packed along the sideline at North Tahoe on Friday.
Then again, few soccer rivalries can match Incline-North Tahoe.
In the first meetings of the season between the Division III powers, the Lakers took both games from the visiting Highlanders, with the girls eking out a 2-1 win and the boys breaking a scoreless halftime tie en route to a 2-0 win.
“It was a really good, intense, physical and well-played game from both teams. A great soccer atmosphere with all the fans there,” said longtime North Tahoe boys coach Beto Alcaraz.
In the girls contest, North Tahoe senior Bryn Anderson put the Lakers up early with a goal in the opening 10 minutes. Incline senior Vanessa Andrade — whose minutes were limited due to leg cramps — knotted the score in the 37th minute when she snuck a low shot just inside the near post.
North Tahoe senior Valencia Covell scored the go-ahead goal about 15 minutes into the second half on a corner kick taken by Anderson. Sophomore goalie Rosalinda Jaurez and the North Tahoe defense kept the Highlanders off the scoreboard the remainder of the contest to preserve the narrow victory.
The Lakers improved to 6-0-1 in Northern Division III play and Incline fell to 6-1.
The boys game was fast and physical from the start as the lakeside foes played to a scoreless draw through one half.
In the second frame, freshman Andrés Cerda gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead with a goal assisted by Juan Pablo Herrera. Junior Austin Carr followed with an insurance goal assisted by Harrison Goss.
“I kept thinking whoever would score the first goal was more likely to win because of the way the game was being played,” Alcaraz said.
North Tahoe is now 6-1 in league and Incline is 5-2. Both teams have a league loss at West Wendover (5-0-1).
