Incline cross-country: Rye, Volz, Powell lead Highlanders at state meet

The Incline cross-country team had a solid showing at the Division III/IV state championship at Reno’s Rancho San Rafael Park on Saturday.

Individually, sophomore Katie Rye and junior Urs Volz led the way with sixth- and seventh-place finishes, respectively, in a field of 26 runners in the girls race. Rye covered the 5K course in 22:13 and Volz in 22:24.

Junior Elaina Marchegger of Sierra Lutheran won the individual state title with a time of 20:25 and was followed by four North Tahoe runners, which helped lead the Lakers to the team title with a low score of 24 points to runner-up Sierra Lutheran’s 36.



The Incline boys had seven runners and finished fourth as a team with 111 points.

Sophomore Cole Powell led the Highlanders with an 18th-place finish out of 60 runners with a time of 20:25 and was followed by Incline teammates Nelson Bedient in 23rd (21:03), Dillon Jenkins in 24th (21:14), Brent Wolf in 25th (21:15) and Jeremy Goldberg in 26th (21:16). Brandon Swick was 38th (23:42) and Andrico Mourelatos 39th (23:45).



North Tahoe’s boys won the team championship for the fourth consecutive year, posting 31 points to second-place Sierra Lutheran’s 70, while senior Trevor Martin of Silver Stage won the individual title in 17:43.
