North Tahoe --

Abbi Johnson 95

Incline junior Devi Meyers led the Highlanders in challenging conditions in a Northern Division III tournament at Eagle Valley Golf Course in Carson City this past Thursday.

The tournament originally was to be held at Tahoe City Golf Course but was relocated due to adverse weather and snow on the course. Conditions were drier but windy and cold in Carson City, making for a rough day of golfing for the the Incline, Yerington and North Tahoe teams.

Nevertheless, Meyers shot an 81 to earn tournament medalist honors. Her Incline team posted a low score of 387 between its top four scoring golfers. Yerington came in at 467 while North Tahoe had only one golfer.

“All the girls finished and all the coaches were impressed with the attitude and desire of the girls to play and finish in adverse conditions,” said Incline coach Joe Humasti.

Aside from Meyers’ 81, Incline’s Christine Schwartz carded a 98, Lauren Keller 100, Kennedy Cohn 108, Brooke Ruhl 115, Karyss Thompson 122 and Bridgette Johnson 129.

“Devi continues to play well. I was impressed with the overall score of all our players; our scores are continuing to improve,” Humasti said. “We still need to work on the short game as that is where our team scores can improve. All our girls are working hard and I am proud of all the attitudes and dedication to the importance of team play.”

North Tahoe’s Abbi Johnson posted the second-lowest score of the day, with a 95, while Yerington’s lowest score was 139, by Lily Klain.

The Highlanders will compete in the Northern Division III Regional Tournament at Eagle Valley Golf Course on Tuesday starting at 10:30 a.m. The top two teams and top five individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the Division III State Championship Tournament at Toanna Vista Golf Course in West Wendover on Thursday, Oct 17 and Friday Oct 18.

Humasti said Battle Mountain and Wells are considered favorites, although the Highlanders are entering regionals with plenty of confidence themselves.

“Once again our coaching staff is stressing that anything can happen on a golf course and there is not really a team to beat,” Humasti said. “My main goal is to have our team prepared and ready to play.”
