Incline Softball | Clutch hitting, defense lifts Highlanders to win

Kelley Thompson has been waiting for a breakout performance from her Incline softball team.

Tuesday, she got it.

The visiting Highlanders combined clutch hitting with solid defense and pitching to earn a thrilling 6-5 comeback win against rival Whittell.

“It was pretty incredible. The best game we’ve played all season,” Thompson said. “The girls finally went out with confidence and played the way I knew they could all along.”

Trailing 5-4 going into the top of the sixth inning, Incline’s Kortney Solis drew a walk before Sarah Wright raked an RBI triple to tie the score. Caroline May then singled in Wright for the go-ahead run.

The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead the first inning. But Incline battled back with two runs of its own in the second, as May reached on a single before Briana Barazza clubbed a two-run home run to knot the score.

Whittell again surged ahead with two runs in the bottom of the inning, and again Incline answered with two runs the following inning to tie the score. Katie Orlady started off with a double and Maddie Findlen followed with Incline’s second home run of the game. The Warriors scratched across a single run in the fourth for a brief lead.

Wright pitched a complete game, scattering 10 hits and six walks, while Incline played flawless defense behind her.

“It just came down to us stringing key hits together,” Thompson said. “We have been averaging six runners left on base a game, so in practice we have been working really hard on getting those timely hits and (Tuesday) it just all came together.”

Incline had eight hits in the game, led by May’s 3-for-3 day with an RBI. Orlady had two hits, including a double, while Wright, Barraza and Findlen each had the one. Barraza and Findlen each drove in two runs with their homers, and Wright drove in the one run with her triple.

The Highlanders improved to 7-12 on the season.

Incline is scheduled to host Whittell on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
