Incline volleyball | Highlanders off to 2-0 start in league

INCLINE VILLAGE — The Incline volleyball team is glad to begin Division III play.

After dropping three preseason matches against large schools, the Highlanders opened league play with a pair of home wins over Battle Mountain and Pershing County on Friday and Saturday.

Incline swept past Battle Mountain, winning 25-8, 25-10, 25-15. The Highlanders needed four games to get past Pershing County, 25-16, 25-18, 19-25, 25-14.

Against the Longhorns, Incline junior co-captain Kira Porter led the way with 14 kills and five blocks. Senior Michelle Tokunaga finished with four service aces and four digs, and Tina Cruz had four kills. Megan Golden and Hadyne Schuft added two kills each.

Battle Mountain dropped to 0-2 in league and 8-10 overall.

Porter was just warming up Friday night. Against the Mustangs she tallied 26 kills and four blocks to lead the Incline attack.

Taylor Binney added five kills, Keegan Wells had three aces and three kills, Sophie Shorin had two aces and 11 digs, Golden had three blocks, and Tokunaga had four digs.

Bailey Wanner had 11 kills to lead Pershing County, which fell to 1-1 in league and 9-8 overall.

Incline (2-0 league, 2-3 overall) is scheduled to host West Wendover on Friday at 5 p.m. The Highlanders play at North Tahoe next Thursday at 5 p.m.
