The Incline volleyball team split a pair of Division III matches on the road this past Friday and Saturday, sweeping past Battle Mountain in three sets before losing to defending state champion Pershing County in three.

The Highlanders defeated Battle Mountain 25-22, 25-9, 26-24 to open the road trip.

Sophomore Kira Porter led the Incline attack with 14 kills, while Mia Bibs and Ronni Flores tallied seven kills apiece and Tina Cruz and Hadyne Schuft each had three kills.

Incline setter Megan Golden finished with 28 assists, Michelle Tokunaga had four service aces and four digs, and Sophie Shorin had 10 digs. Bibs also recorded two blocks.

Battle Mountain is 6-3 in league and 17-12 overall.

Incline fell in straight sets, 12-25, 19-25, 25-27, against Pershing County, which improved to 21-5 overall and 8-1 in league. The Mustangs’ only league loss came against Yerington, 3-1, on Sept. 17.

Despite the final score, the Highlanders played the defending champs tough in the second and third sets, particularly the third set as they nearly swiped it.

While Pershing County senior Melissa Gonzalez posted a match-high 25 kills — out of her team’s 34 total — Porter smashed 16 kills and had four blocks to lead the Highlanders.

Flores finished with eight kills, Shorin had six aces and four digs, and Golden had 23 assists.
