J.R. Murphy’s Yavapai College (Ariz.) baseball team has played its way into the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series.
The 10-team bracket tournament will be held in Grand Junction, Colo., May 27 through June 3.
Murphy, a 2004 Truckee High graduate who has established himself as the Roughriders’ ace pitcher in his sophomore season, will get the start in Yavapai’s opening game against Wallace State Community College (Ala.) on Sunday.
Yavapai’s first-round game, considered the “showcase game” of the tournament, Murphy said, will be broadcast in audio on the Web site http://www.jucogj.org live at 6:30 p.m.
After hearing rumor of crowds 13,000 strong in past NJCAA World Series games, Murphy is pumped beyond words.
“I can’t even explain to you,” he said of his feelings entering the series.
To get this deep into the postseason, Yavapai (54-10) has gone 7-1 since clinching its division.
Murphy’s last win came in the Roughriders’ super regional series against Lamar Community College (Colo.) on May 18, when he struck out 10 hitters and allowed two runs in eight innings of work.
