After a short break for the holidays, Nordic racing returned to Donner Summit with the annual Paco’s Freestyle event on Sunday.
More than 80 people participated in either the 10K, 5K or 2K distances.
In the 10K, Patrick Johnson raced to victory with a time of 27 minutes, 32.3 seconds, while Caitlin Bernstein was the top woman and 12th overall in a field of 47 racers, posting a time of 31:37.3.
Peter Carroll finished second overall in 28:52.7 and was followed by Jordan McElroy (28:53.3), Casey Jobe (29:00.1) and Ryland Belisle (29:02.1) rounding out the top five.
Skyler Mullings was sixth and was trailed by Jeff Schloss, Ambrose Tuscano, Charlie Fereday and Matthew Sanford in 10th.
Among the women’s field, Molly Zurn finished second (17th overall) in 35:05.4, while Keri Starr Hamby was third in 35:55.4, Beth Thomas was fourth in 36:08.2 and Carolyn Tiernan was fifth in 37:27.7.
U14 skier Haydn Halvorsen claimed the win among 22 racers in the 5K, covering the course in a time of 15:20. Ian Smith was second in 15:53 and David Dalicandro was third in 16:11.1.
Savannah Blide placed fourth overall and first among female racers, recording a time of 16:15.1. She was followed by Kyla Burrill (16:29.7), Grace Bronstone (16:42.9), Dawson Smith, Chloe Gorman, Eleanore Hamilton and Camille Syben rounding out the top 10.
Twelve youth skiers took to the 2K course, with Lexie Madigan winning with a time of 8:07.4, Lily Murnane placing second in 8:20.5 and Caitlin Smith placing third in 8:33.9.
They were followed by Carly Davis, Lauren Tanner, Marisa Donovan, CJ Nygard, Sven Halvorsen, Dewie Egan and Saylor Murphy.
Next up on the Nordic racing calendar is the Lakes Basin race at the Tamarack Lodge this Sunday. After that is the Sierra Skogsloppet at Tahoe Donner XC on Jan. 19, the Alpenglow Freestyle at Tahoe Cross Country on Jan 25 and the Tahoe Rim Tour from North Lake Tahoe to Northstar on Feb. 1.
