Junior golf event a success despite weather

Special to the Sun

Truckee’s Coyote Moon Golf Course hosted the second event of the Truckee Tahoe Junior Golf Tour on July 7.

It was a challenging weather day for the 57 young participants, as storm clouds filled with rain and threatening lightning that resulted in a 45-minute delay. But those who persevered were treated to a beautiful afternoon for golf.

Sienna Scibird led the way shooting a 2-under-par 34 playing from the men’s tees. Scibird is a junior to be at Truckee High.

Josh Wiegandt led the way in the Boys 14-15 division with a 37. Matthew Sutherland came in second at 40, and Airon Yarbrough was third with a 43.

Will Belden led the Boys 16-17 age group with a 46 and was followed by Jack Colton at 49.

Julia Smith took first place in the Girls 8-9 division. Ryan Flynn led the way in the Girls 10-11 with 50. Stella de Wit was second at 54, with Kenzie McCormick taking third with a 59.

Haley McCormick once again led the girls 12-14 with a 55 but was followed closely by Sofia de Wit at 57.

Tyler Whisler led the charge for the Boys 8-9 with a 72.

Gabe Smith shot a fantastic 47 to lead the Boys 10-11. Thayer Kacher was close behind with a 49 for second place. Max Carter took third place with a 50.

Zack Cohen won the Boys 12-13 age group with a 40. Ethan Flynn was second with a 45, and Patrick Volkman came in third with a 48.

The Resort at Squaw Creek hosts the next event of the Truckee Tahoe Junior Golf Tour.
