Lake Tahoe, Truckee runners race Bishop High Sierra Ultra
When an ultramarathon takes place within a couple hundred miles of the Tahoe area, Truckee-Tahoe runners are sure to have a presence.
The Bishop High Sierra Ultra on May 17 was no exception. The event, which featured four races ranging in distance from 20 miles to 100 kilometers, drew a large handful of area ultrarunners.
Peter Broomhall of Truckee led the Tahoe-area contingent in the 100K, as he finished fifth in a field of 45 participants with a finish guntime of 11 hours, 21 minutes, 11 seconds. Chris Price of Pasadena took the win, covering the course in 9:11:57.
Gretchen Brugman and Betsy Nye, both of Truckee, finished third and fourth among women and eighth and ninth overall, respectively, posting times of 13:06:17 and 13:29:43. Meghan Arbogast of Cool was the top woman and fourth overall in 11:11:00.
Helen Pelster of Truckee finished 11th in the women’s field and 23rd overall with a time of 15:35:53.
In the 50-mile race, which included 46 participants, Truckee’s Peter Fain finished runner-up to Bishop local Jeff Kozak, posting a time of 8:08:04. Kozak reached the finish line in 7:22:14.
Dale Berry of Incline Village wasn’t far behind Fain, as he finished third with a time of 8:28:24.
Truckee’s Paul Sweeney, who said he suffered a meltdown with 10 miles remaining, requiring a break to recover from nausea and cramps, still managed a 13th-place finish overall in 11:38:55 (read Sweeney’s race report here).
Stephanie Nistler of Truckee fared well in the 50K, placing 10th among women and 22nd overall in the 46-member field. Eric Lynch of Eugene, Ore., won the race with a time of 5:12:54, and Cassandra Dufek of Yosemite was the top woman and second overall in 6:11:50.
Justin Nistler of Truckee finished 13th out of 48 runners in the 20-mile race, posting a time of 3:54:16. Ramon Camacho of Los Angeles won in 2:51:50, and Julia Runcie of Bishop was the top woman and sixth overall in 3:21:46.
Alanna Misico of Tahoe City was the 10th woman and 21st overall in 4:05:41, while South Lake Tahoe runners Monika Jaworska (4:24:13) was 23rd overall, Heather McMartin (4:24:13) 24th and Koren Pollitt (4:31:19) 29th.
