Laker girls to play in Virginia City hoops tourney

The North Tahoe High girls basketball team will travel to Virginia City this weekend to defend its title in the Virginia City High School basketball tournament.

The tournament field is comprised mostly of small schools.

Lakers head coach Scott Conn said that last year’s team was made up mostly of incoming sophomores, many of whom will be at this year’s tournament as incoming juniors.

While North Tahoe only had enough girls to send one team last year, Conn said that high interest in girls basketball at this year’s initial meeting has made it possible for him to take both his varsity and junior varsity teams to Virginia City.

Seventeen girls showed up to the initial meeting, Conn said.

The second-year coach said that for this tournament the JV squad will be comprised mostly of incoming freshman girls, and the varsity team will be nearly all returning varsity players with the exception of three players Conn is bringing up from last year’s JV team.
