Laker golfers to play Myrtle Beach course

Staff reports

The North Tahoe High boys golf team leaves Tuesday morning for a national tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Laker golfers are participating in the Spring Palmetto High School Golf Championship, which will host about 130 high school golf teams from all over the country for a three-day, 54-hole, college-style tournament held on 13 of the Grand Strand’s courses.

North Tahoe will have a practice round on Wednesday before playing a qualifying round Thursday on the 2006 U.S. Open course.

The qualifying round will seed each team into flights made up of teams of similar caliber, so that small programs such as North Tahoe won’t have to play prestigious year-round programs.

Tournament play will commence Friday and Saturday, and the Lakers will fly back to Reno Sunday morning.

Dick Tomlinson, head coach of the North Tahoe squad, said the tournament will be a great boost for his golfers.

“They’ll be better players for the rest of the season,” Tomlinson said.

In addition to the lessons his players will take after competing with players from all over the country on some of the nicest holes on the planet, Tomlinson hopes the experience will be one his players ” especially the three fourth-year seniors on his team ” will never forget.

“I think they’re going to have a great experience,” Tomlinson said.
