Lakers basketball season comes to a close

Charles Levinson

Winemucca, Nev. – The basketball season came to a close Tuesday night for both the men’s and women’s teams from North Tahoe High School.

After travelling three-and-a-half hours to Winemucca, Nev., for the first round of the NIAA playoffs, the Lowry Buckaroos handed both North Tahoe squads a dose of humility.

The men lost 73-39, the third time this season that the Lakers have fallen to the Buckaroos by at least 30 points. The Lakers turned the ball over on five of their first six possessions and Lowry answered each turnover with a three-pointer. That amounted to five three pointers and an awful start for the Lakeshow.

“Nothing we did worked,” coach Chris Park said. “Basically they are way too strong.”

The women did not fare much better. Despite playing the strongest half of their season in the second half of the game, the Buckaroos still bested the Laker girls 82-43. Like their male counterparts the girls got off to a horrific start, scoring just two points in the first quarter.

“We never recovered after that,” coach Justin Caruthers said.

Despite the blowout, the young Laker team ended the season on the right note, scoring 29 points in the second half. With three freshman starting this season, and only one starter graduating, they could be a team to reckon with next season.
