Lakers show progress in loss at Lovelock
North Tahoe’s football team met the competition Friday night at Lovelock, losing 34-16 to one of the toughest teams in the Northern 2A.
“We played a lot better than we did the first week (in a 38-6 loss at Southern 3A Faith Lutheran),” North Tahoe head coach Scott Everist said. “Overall we were in much better conditon and our execution was way better.”
While North Tahoe never gave up, the Lakers were no match for the Mustangs, last year’s 2A state runner-up.
The Lakers managed 14 yards in the first half compared to Lovelock’s 316.
Down by 28 points late in the third quarter, North Tahoe junior Brent Marple opened up the field with a 53-yard gain to put the Lakers in scoring position.
Facing fourth-and-goal at the 7, Lakers quarterback Ryan Blount rolled right and lobbed the ball to Marple, who posted the Lakers first six points of the game.
After another Lovelock touchdown, it was Joe Erman who took a pass from Blount and converted a 78-yard touchdown with 3:38 left in the game, bringing the final score to an 18 point differential.
North Tahoe, which has been struggling with numbers for years, once again is not fielding a JV team. Despite having one team, there are only 27 players in the program. On Friday, the Lakers suited up 19 of those 27.
“We came out and we were short some key players, but the kids who went played hard,” Everist said. “Lovelock is a terrific team. You’ve got to give them credit. So overall I was pleased.”
On the rushing side of things, North Tahoe ran the ball 23 times for 77 yards.
Ernesto Mendoza had 11 carries but only managed 10 yards against a red wall of Lovelock defensive lineman.
Blount was 5-for-9 with an interception and 104 yards.
North Tahoe’s next game is at 6 p.m. on Friday at Incline.
